Todd Reich, Schecter Guitar Research Tech Manager, Goes Black in 15 Minutes with MasterTint! We are always thrilled to hear from the pro techs, luthiers, and manufacturer MVP’s who are raving about our GluBoost Family of Products. Here, Todd Reich, Schecter Guitar Research’s Tech Manager, talks about his first MasterTint experience:

“After setting aside instruments that would be good candidates for a bit of experimenting with MasterTint, I just used it for the first time. This stuff is awesome! I’ve used pre-tinted superglues for a while, and these blow them away! The bummer with pre-tinted glues is that the color is usually relatively translucent. This is because the color is suspended in the glue, but not diffused evenly throughout it, so you oftentimes need a repair of a certain minimum thickness with multiple layers to achieve an opaque presentation (or one consistent in color).

I had a black, open-pore finish mahogany-body instrument that had dings in the bottom edge going through the color coat, revealing bare wood. But the instrument was designed with an ultrathin finish, so there wasn’t much depth to the dings. Pre-tinted finish wouldn’t have provided a true color match unless I layered it above the surrounding finish, which would look terrible. I just now tossed the guitar on my bench, prepped the surface, mixed up a bit of thin Fill n Finish with the black powder and KA-POW I had just what I needed! Literally in a matter of 20 seconds, I had a nice, solid black color glue, and I was able to apply it as thin as I needed without allowing the wood underneath to show! That’s incredibly helpful, as the less you have to mess with leveling, the less work you have ahead of you.

Before MasterTint, the only way I would have been satisfied with this repair would be to take it to the finishing department. I wouldn’t have ever thought that something of this sort would qualify as a “15-minutes-on-the-bench repair” but that’s what I just did! Granted, a black-on-black repair is among the easiest to color-match, but still! It looks good as new!

With my first use, I can say that I seriously love MasterTint and can’t wait to get more experienced with it in attempting to tackle more complex color-matching repair operations.

This is a game-changer in the repair playbook, in my opinion! I’m happy as a pig in the mud with this stuff”.
